historybookThe MapInfo User Group UK is a wholly independent group of MapInfo users.

The group was formed in 1992 after a group of MapInfo resellers along with Northamptonshire County Council held a MapInfo users meeting. Enough interest was shown at the meeting to form a MapInfo User Group. Representatives of MapInfo in the USA gave their support and the official MapInfo User Group UK was formed.

It was decided that the group would have three meetings a year and publish a news letter. With no more than a few dozen members, it was relatively easy to find locations for meeting as members could often hold meetings at their own premises. Meetings have been held at Northamptonshire County Council, Powys County Council, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and of course London.

The majority of our members are local authorities and utilities but includes a growing number of commercial organisations as well as most of the major resellers and developers of MapInfo. We are fully recognised and supported by MapInfo UK and regularly have speakers from MapInfo at our meetings. A volunteer committee runs the group. In early 1998 the first of what we hope will be a number of regional sub groups was formed in the Wales and West area based on the high degree of MapInfo usage in Local Authorities within the region. In the following year the group has been an ongoing success with a record of hosting two meetings a year and a growing membership.

Running parallel to this, the national group continued to host at least one meeting per year and towards the end of 2000 a new committee have taken over the running and have commenced work on an ambitious schedule of events and promotional work including a members only area on this relaunched Web site. The accounts and invoicing were taken on by the committee, which had previously been dealt with by the local authorities that the committee members belonged to. The aim was get back to providing three meetings a year - one in London, one in the Bristol area and another in the Leeds / Manchester area - giving as many members as possible the opportunity to attend a 'local' meeting.

2001 saw the group meet at more commercial venues such as Sadler's Wells Theatre in London and The Watershed Theatre in Bristol. Both these meetings were regarded as a huge success, both by members and resellers, with the introduction of 'parallel workshops' proving very popular. With these improved venues came an increase in costs which saw a rise in the subscription fee - the first since the Group was formed.
